George and Dee Smerdon went to Geita in 2010, working on different projects. George, a retired GP, to work with Mary, the coordinator of the local newly formed Palliative care team, and Dee to teach in a local primary school, Rich Hill School. During the three months they spent there, they witnessed Mary’s dedication and commitment to care for these children as well as others in the community who lives were blighted by poverty and illness. Together with Sallie Hage who, with her husband Karl, had come to visit George and Dee, they offered to help Mary, supporting her in this formidable challenge.
My name is Sallie Hage and I am one of the founding Trustees of Friends of Malezi. I became involved with setting up the project after spending time with Dee and George in Geita and seeing at first hand the plight of so many orphaned and homeless children. I am a keen fundraiser and have successfully organised many events in support of FOM from Pub Quiz’s to car boot sales to clothing events.
My name is Alison Counsell and I am Trustee and the Charity’s Treasurer. I have been a practising Chartered Accountant for some 25 years and deal with the Charity’s financial affairs on a voluntary basis.
